Is your BMW sunroof stuck? Don't worry! While the sunroof provides you with sunlight and fresh air, sometimes it may suddenly refuse to cooperate. Whether it's not closing in the rain or not opening at all, understanding the common issues and repair methods for BMW sunroofs that fail to close automatically in the rain might help you easily resolve the problem and restore your sunroof to normal operation!

Fault Description

The vehicle may occasionally display the following check control message on the combination instrument or CID: "Sunroof cannot automatically close in the rain." In this case, the sunroof cannot close automatically during rainy conditions and must be closed manually. If this issue persists, the customer is advised to contact an authorized service dealer for further inspection.

When diagnosing with an OBD scanner, one or more of the following fault codes may appear in the Roof Function Center (FZD):

  • 030220 SHD: System not calibrated
  • 030215 SHD: Invalid characteristic line, no calibration
  • 030214 SHD: Passed zero position, calibration lost
  • 0302A0 SHD: System not calibrated
  • 030295 SHD: Invalid characteristic line, no calibration
  • 030294 SHD: Passed zero position, calibration lost
  • 030208 SHD: System not calibrated
  • 030203 SHD: Invalid characteristic line
  • 030202 SHD: Passed zero position, calibration lost

Affected Models:

  • F90, F91, F92, F93, F95
  • F96, F97, F98, G02, G05
  • G07, G08, G14, G20, G22
  • G28, G29, G30, G32, G38

Note: This issue only applies to vehicles equipped with the following optional configurations:

  • SA 402: Panoramic Glass Sunroof
  • SA 403: Electric Glass Sunroof
  • SA 407 SKY LOUNGE: Panoramic Glass Sunroof

Fault Analysis

Cause of the Fault:

A software malfunction in the Roof Function Center (FZD) may lead to abnormal sunroof operation.

Loss of Sunroof initialization settings:

This typically occurs after the vehicle has lost power, or when the electric glass sunroof button is pressed for an extended period or at an incorrect angle. In such cases, the user can perform the sunroof initialization process on their own.

Solution:

There are two known fault symptoms, each with a different resolution method.

Situation 1:

Park the vehicle and turn off the ignition. At this point, the combination instrument or CID will display the following check control message (ID262): "Sunroof cannot automatically close in the rain." In this case, the sunroof will not automatically close in the rain and must be manually closed. If this issue persists, the customer should contact an authorized service dealer for inspection.

Cause: The sunroof initialization settings have been lost.

Solution: Perform the sunroof initialization as described in the user manual.

Situation 2:

After unlocking the vehicle and opening the driver's side door, the combination instrument or CID will display the following check control message (ID262): "Sunroof cannot automatically close in the rain." In this case, the sunroof will not automatically close in the rain and must be manually closed. If this issue persists, the customer should contact an authorized service dealer for inspection.

Cause: A timing issue in the Roof Function Center (FZD).

Solution:

  • Read the vehicle’s integration level.
  • If the current integration level is below S15A21035XX / S15C21035XX / S18A21035XX, use ISTA to program and code the vehicle to integration level S15A21035XX / S15C21035XX / S18A21035XX or higher.
  • If the integration level is already S15A21035XX / S15C21035XX / S18A21035XX or higher, no programming is required. Use ISTA for diagnostics, perform testing modules if necessary, and then reevaluate the vehicle.

What Causes a Sunroof Not to Open?

  • Electrical Faults: The operation of the sunroof depends on the electrical system. If there is an issue with the wiring, such as an open circuit or short circuit, the sunroof may not function properly.
  • Motor Failure: The sunroof's drive motor is a crucial component that controls its opening and closing. If the motor fails, the sunroof will not open or close, regardless of the method used.
  • Insufficient Lubrication of Tracks: Proper lubrication is required for the smooth operation of the sunroof tracks. If the tracks are severely underlubricated, the sunroof seals may stick to the vehicle body, preventing the sunroof from opening.
  • Foreign Objects in the Slot: If there are foreign objects lodged in the sunroof's slot, they can obstruct the normal operation of the sunroof, preventing it from opening.

Summary

In recent years, sunroofs have become a standard feature in many vehicles.
