This smoke leak tester works great! It has a built-in air pump so I don’t need extra tools. It starts smoking quickly, is easy to adjust, and finds small leaks fast. The overheat protection is reliable, and it works perfectly for my car repair jobs. Very practical and worth buying!

This machine is good value for money compared to others, as the others require you to add air pressure. This smoke machine has its own air pump and only needs to be connected to the battery. As a general comment, it would be very convenient if, in addition to the smoke cutoff switch, it had another switch to turn off the compressor, but this could easily be solved with a separate switch.

The T80 is an entry-level smoke leak detector with a built-in air pump, so it needs no shop air supply. It runs from the vehicle’s 12V battery and fills the line under test with smoke so leak points show clearly.

How to Use

  1. Add oil and hang the detectorBefore first use, add baby oil or liquid paraffin to the filler. Open the hood and hang the detector from its hook.
  2. Open the lineDisconnect the pipe that will be connected to the detector and attach the smoke output tube.
  3. Power onClip the power leads to the DC 12V battery and turn on the power switch.
  4. Find the leakIn about 30 seconds the pipe fills with smoke. Look for escaping smoke, using a headlamp if needed.

Good to Know

Caution
  • Power the detector only from a 12V battery; too much current will damage it.
  • Fill 10–15 ml of oil at a time and never more than 15 ml; overfilling leaves no space to produce smoke.
  • Do not run the detector for more than 8 minutes continuously; let it rest between runs.
  • The round part of the detector gets hot; avoid touching it to prevent burns.
  • Keep smoke away from smoke-sensitive parts during testing.
Care
  • Top up with fresh oil only when the smoke gets thin.
  • Pour out the old oil before refilling, and replace the oil regularly.

This works “okay” as an evap leak tester. In the past I have used far more expensive machines with far better smoke production, however this gets five stars because it works nearly as well but for a fraction of the price.
